About What Work Involves

What Work Involves explains what jobs are actually like to do — not what they require on paper. The site is written for people choosing a first career, changing fields in their thirties or forties, or advising someone who is about to do either.

Why this site exists

Most career decisions are made with poor information. Job titles are vague, salary sites disagree by tens of thousands for the same role, and the people who could tell you what the day is really like are busy doing it. We try to close that gap with short, specific, sourced guides rather than motivational content.

What we publish

Role guides, each following the same structure so you can compare across jobs without re-learning the format. Alongside them we publish comparisons between roles people weigh against each other, and decision guides for the ones that cost the most to get wrong. Every guide states where its numbers came from and when they were checked.

How we work

  • Sourced. Pay ranges cite where the number came from and when it was checked. Unsourced claims get cut, not softened.
  • Reviewed. Guides are re-checked at least once a year; faster-moving fields more often.
  • Corrected in public. When a figure is wrong, we fix the page and note the change rather than quietly editing it.

The full editorial policy sets out our sourcing standards, our review cycle, and how we use automation in drafting.

Who we are

What Work Involves is an independent publication. We are not a recruiting agency, we do not sell career coaching, and we do not accept fees from employers or training providers to feature a role or improve how it reads.

It is run by one person, not a staff. That is why every guide carries the site name rather than a personal byline: there is no separate editor, researcher, or fact-checker to name. The trade-off is a small number of guides published slowly; the benefit is that the same person who writes a page is the one who sources it and answers the correction email.

How we are funded

The site does not currently use affiliate links. If that changes, any affiliate link will be disclosed on the page it appears and will never affect an assessment. Read the affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong, a description is out of date, or a guide misses the part of the job that matters most, write to 269659595@qq.com with the page URL. Corrections are prioritised over everything else in the inbox.
